What stays on the device
Fleet has no account and no online multiplayer. The match, including each fleet’s positions, is saved on the iPhone in the app’s local storage. The number of included games is kept in the Keychain so it remains after an update. A one-time unlock is remembered through Apple’s purchase records.
The app reads the phone’s fold, orientation, and motion so it can choose a board layout and show a rotation measurement while a handover is tried. Ship positions and motion measurements stay on the device. Ship coordinates are not sent off the phone.
Purchases
A few games are included. Further games use a one-time unlock sold by the App Store. Apple processes the payment. Fleet does not receive your card number. Restore purchases asks Apple whether this Apple ID already owns the unlock. Either price of the unlock opens the same table. The legal basis is performance of that purchase (Article 6(1)(b) GDPR).
Usage analytics
The released app sends usage events to Mixpanel, stored in the European Union at api-eu.mixpanel.com. A build with no Mixpanel project token sends nothing.
The app creates a random identifier and stores it on the device. That identifier is not your name, email, or Apple ID. Mixpanel may use the IP address of the request for a coarse location. Automatic Mixpanel events are turned off. A profile field on the random identifier records whether the table is unlocked.
The events are:
- The app was opened, including whether a saved game resumed, the phase, the mode, the board size, whether the table is unlocked, and how many included games remain.
- A game started, was abandoned, or finished, including mode, board size, phase, shot count, duration, and which side won, recorded as player one or player two.
- A fleet was sealed, including the mode, which player sealed it, whether the ships were placed automatically, and the board size.
- The local save failed.
- The unlock sheet was shown, declined, purchased, cancelled, left pending, or restored. A completed purchase can include the price and currency. The offer is recorded as the regular unlock or the lower price.
Each event can also include the device posture and the board layout, which describe how the phone is folded and how the two boards are arranged.
The legal basis is legitimate interest in understanding how Fleet is played, so the game can be improved (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). You can object by writing to the address in the impressum.
How long it is kept
The match and the included-game count stay on your iPhone until you remove the save or delete the app. Usage events remain with Mixpanel in the EU, filed under the random identifier on that device. Write to the impressum address to ask for deletion, and include any detail that helps find the request.
Your rights
Where the GDPR applies, you can ask for access, correction, deletion, or restriction, and you can object to processing based on legitimate interest. You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. In Germany, that is the authority for your federal state.
Changes
